Church and Area History

Growing Years

The congregation was part of the Christian Church until 1939. Carl Jones held a revival and converted the congregation to the Church of Christ.

The church met in the school building, which was where the front part of the cemetery is now, until April 1950, when the building pictured at the right was constructed.

The Crossville Chronicle (local newspaper),  said :

"Linary - The service held Sunday at the new church building were very inspiring. Many came from other places. At noon a bountiful dinner was spread on the lawn of the church. The building committee, Elmo Hassler, Hubert Tollett and Ridley Hall, is due much praise in going ahead with the building plans against many odds. Many days of free labor were given by both men and women of the church."

The congregation moved nearby to the current location on Sept. 16, 1973. The seating capacity was about 225. Bob Holder was the local preacher, but was not full-time. There was a 10-night gospel meeting conducted by previous preachers and local boys who were preaching elsewhere.

The first full-time paid minister was Odell Kirby, 1974. Others, since that time, include Albert Kerley, Dennis Lovell, Don Wright, and Mitchell Covington, Ricky Burse.
